Jian Zhang


Staff Scientist, Organic and Macromolecular Synthesis




Jian Zhang received his Ph.D. in 2008 from University of Pittsburgh under the direction of Prof. Stéphane Petoud. Then he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Prof. Chad Mirkin at Northwestern University. He began his independent academic career at University of Nebraska-Lincoln (2011), where he was Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor (2017). He joined the Foundry in 2018 as a Staff Scientist. His honors include an NSF CAREER award, the UNL Layman award, and Achievement Award for Outstanding Service in Materials and Nanoscience Educational Outreach.

Research Interests

Dr. Zhang's research interests lie in the design and synthesis of nanoporous materials such as MOFs and COFs with interesting structural, chemical, and optoelectronic profiles. Current research goals are focused on new 2D and 3D porous hybrid materials for their electrocatalytic and photoelectric catalytic applications in energy conversion. These projects will use organic synthesis to construct novel building blocks to build architectures with tailored structural, electronic, and dynamic features that modulate the kinetic aspects of the energy-related reactions.
