Senior Advisor, NCEM
Ulrich Dahmen obtained his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1979. He served more than 20 years as Director of NCEM and now holds the title of NCEM Senior Advisor. As Senior Advisor, Dahmen is focused on multidisciplinary materials research and helping to set the agenda for electron microscopy research at the Molecular Foundry and NCEM.
Dr. Dahmen's major research interests are embedded nanostructures in solids and their characterization by advanced electron microscopy. This includes atomic resolution imaging of the mechanisms and dynamics of structural phase transformations and their dependence on size and shape. His research encompasses precipitation reactions in multi-component materials, the structure of interfaces, orientation relationships, crystallographic symmetry, inclusion shapes, and the role of defects in phase transformations and thin film growth.
