Research Interests

  • Atomic scale surface chemistry and the application of scanning tunneling microscopy to molecule-molecule and molecule-surface interactions.
  • Applications of atomic force microscopy, including electrical and tribological characterization of surfaces, self-assembled molecular films, and wetting properties of surfaces.
  • Mechanical and electrical characterization of nanostructures, and self-organizing interactions between nanostructures and substrates.
  • Instrumentation development for nanomaterial characterization and surface science, including scanning probe microscopes, probe development and in situ manipulation and analysis.

Current projects

  • Fundamental surface chemistry of metals by STM (with Miquel Salmeron, Foundry/LBL MSD) Electronic contribution to friction on GaAs: An atomic force microscope study
  • Development of a combined scanning probe/electron microscope system for nanostructure characterization and manipulation.
  • Development of novel and self-sensing probes for scanning probe microscopy
(with Ivo Rangelow, T.U. Illmanau, and Stefano Cabrini, Molecular Foundry).
  • Integration of scanning probe microscopy with optical spectro-microscopy
    (with Jim Schuck, Molecular Foundry).
