Scientific Achievement
Developed a revolutionary materials platform for the continuous production of discrete, responsive, and reconfigurable all-liquid systems.
Significance and Impact
The interfacial assembly of nanoparticle surfactants (NPS) suppressed Plateau-Rayleigh instabilities, and a continuous process yielded highly uniform droplets with controlled volume that can change shape on application of an external field.
Research Details
- NPSs produced at immiscible liquid interfaces from functional NPs in one liquid and polymers with complementary end-functionality in a second immiscible fluid.
- NPSs suppressed Plateau-Rayleigh (PR) instabilities of free-falling jet of an aqueous phase into an oil resulting in longer jets.
- Simple route to continuously form spheres and ultimately tubules of one liquid phase in another.
