Scientific Achievement
A team of Foundry staff and users developed a new method of performing point spectroscopic measurements with an STM in combination with AI/ML to provide a quicker and more reproducible hyperspectral mapping approach to identify electronic features on WS2 and Au{111}.
Significance and Impact
The new method enables full characterization of sample surfaces and provides a means of autonomous experimentation that is fast, accessible, and opens the door to the detailed exploration of novel materials, including quantum materials.
Research Details
- The research team collected scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) point measurements autonomously via Gaussian process regression and benchmarked the method on WS2 and Au{111}.
- They demonstrate how to perform measurements with reproducible spectra, and how to create a statistically significant electronic characterization of the different intrinsic defects that can be found on samples of interest.
