Talk Title: Altermagnetic materials and how you can also design them
Zoom recording (available for 30 days)

Abstract:
In this talk, I will review the emerging field of altermagnetism, a novel magnetic phase distinct from the more conventional ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism, and our work on how we can understand these materials from a materials science and chemistry perspective. The unique properties of altermagnets, such as their nonrelativistic spin-split band structure in absence of magnetization, are all well understood in terms of group theory. I will explain how one can relate and map these concepts into a language more commonly used for material scientists and chemists, such as the nature of the chemical bonds, crystal field distortions and orbital hybridizations. I will exemplify such notions with recent theory and experiments carried out in the Molecular Foundry. Finally, I will also show how we can utilize this knowledge to design and engineer altermagnetism in more complex systems such as domain walls of multiferroic materials.
