Left: This image is of freshwater bacteria, Caulobacter crescentus (shown in pink), attaching onto a fabricated hexagonal silica microplatelet (white underlying structure). This image is part of work in progress by the DARPA Engineered Living Materials team (Dong Li, Sneha Jani, Wei Li, Victor Mann, Nicole Torquato, Behzad Rad, Paul Ashby, Bruce Cohen, Kathleen Ryan, Michel Maharbiz, Marimikel Charrier and Caroline Ajo-Franklin).
Background: The background consists of an aberration-corrected image of a Si3N4 sample that demonstrates the capabilities of automated software for correcting residual aberrations in high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The image is part of published work in Advanced Structural and Chemical Imaging. DOI: 10.1186/s40679-016-0030-1
Right: The image on the right depicts a phase-change Metal Organic Framework (MOF) that is incorporated into a polymer. The MOF increases the permeability of CO2 and the selectivity of CO2 over N2, allowing for these gases to be separated from one another. The new mixed-matrix polymer has double the separation performance compared to a plain polymer. This work was recently published in Nano Letters. DOI: 10.1021/acs.nanolett.7b03106
Center: The center image shows a Covalent Organic Framework (COF) that has tunable electrical conductivity. A thin film made of the new COF has a conductivity that is three orders of magnitude higher than a plain thin film. This work was published in the journal Chemical Science DOI: 10.1039/C4SC02593H
