Users who plan to work onsite should complete the following training.
Core Safety Training Courses – Online
After your proposal is activated, a list of Safety Training Courses related to your project will be generated and can be found in the User Portal under “Prepare for your Project”. To save time, these courses can be completed online prior to your arrival.
New User Training – In Person
MFD-0012 – New User Orientation
All new users who will be working on site must sign up for this 30 min in-person training offered in person and on zoom, daily at 2:00 pm Pacific.
MFD-0010 – ISM Principles and Case Studies
The MFD-0010 training is offered twice a month in person and virtually by Zoom.
MFD-0015 – Individual Hazardous Waste Briefing
MFD 0015 is a Hazardous Waste Briefing for individuals who perform work at the Molecular Foundry. This course is for those who have already completed EHS 0604 EHS Hazardous Waste Training.
The Hazardous Waste Briefing requires an in-person certification knowledge check using your Waste Brief booklet which is provided by your Foundry Activity Lead, PI or onboarding User Office personnel (Mary Padilla).
Facility Onboarding – In Person
To perform work in a Facility at the Foundry, you need to complete an in-person orientation for that facility. Each Facility has its own onboarding process. Contact your assigned scientist to schedule your onboarding orientation. The facility onboarding documents can be found below (for reference only).
WPC and OJT Training
Work Planning and Control (WPC) is a process of integrating safety into the planning of “work,” so that the hazards are identified and controlled. This work is assigned to “WPC Activities” within the Activity Manager. All work at the Foundry is covered by task-specific WPC Activities. Before starting any work on a new process or instrumentation, a staff member or “Activity Lead” will assign you to the appropriate WPC Activity.
Users are responsible for understanding the scope of work, the hazards and controls associated with performing the work, and what they are authorized and qualified to do within the scope of work they are assigned. You can log in to the Activity Manager to view your activities. After reviewing the activity, you must “accept the conditions” of the WPC Activity.
In addition to WPC, many activities will also involve On the Job Training (OJT). OJT is a tool or process-specific training by the Activity Lead, staff member, or instrument manager, and is generally in-person. Once the OJT portion of the training is complete, the Activity Lead will update your WPC Activity to reflect your level of authorization as either “Authorized to Work under Direct Supervision” or “Authorized to Work.” Be sure that you understand your level of authorization. This completes the WPC process. However, if the scope or nature of your work changes, you should always discuss this with the Activity Lead.
