The background depicts a “galaxy” of single transition metal atoms imaged using HAADF STEM at the Foundry’s National Center for Electron Microscopy (NCEM). The material has been proposed for a new energy transforming catalyst. The image was submitted by technical staff member Chengyu Song to the Foundry’s National Nano Day NanoArt Contest and won 3rd place in the People’s Choice.
The shooting stars are a 6-arm crystal of ZIF-8, a type of metal organic framework (MOF) that has been embedded with sugar alcohols. Sugar alcohols are phase-change-materials with high latent heat, which has potential for being used for thermal management in power plant cooling systems. This image was submitted by Foundry user Chih-Hao Hsu to the Foundry’s National Nano Day NanoArt Contest and won 1st place in the Foundry’s Choice.
