Bio:
Jie Xu is a scientist at Argonne National Lab, and an assistant professor of molecular engineering in the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering.
Her research integrates polymer science with AI-guided autonomous experimentation to accelerate the discovery of advanced functional polymers. She leads the development of Polybot (https://cnm.anl.gov/pages/polybot), a self-driving laboratory that connects synthesis, processing, and characterization with AI/ML-guided decision-making and currently operates as a user tool within a DOE user facility. Her work spans electronic polymers, soft materials for devices, and sustainable polymer technologies, with a unifying emphasis on embedding circular design principles into next-generation materials. She received the Materials Research Society Postdoctoral Award and is named to the MIT Technology Review’s list of Innovators Under 35, Newsweek list of America’s Greatest Disruptors as a budding disruptor, and 2023 Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering Early Investigator Honoree by the American Chemical Society.
